Getting There

Keelung is well connected to Taipei and is one of the easier day-trip destinations on the island.

By train: The fastest and most convenient option. Trains on the Taiwan Railways network run frequently from Taipei Main Station to Keelung Station, taking around 40 minutes. Trains run throughout the day and into the late evening — you will not miss the night market because of transport.

By bus: Several bus routes run between Taipei and Keelung, including Kuo-Kuang and other intercity bus operators from Taipei Bus Station near Taipei Main Station. The journey takes 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic, and buses are cheap. Express buses are faster but less frequent than the train.

By car or scooter: The National Freeway No. 1 connects Taipei to Keelung in around 30 to 45 minutes without traffic. Parking in the city centre is limited — the train is easier for most visitors.

By ferry: Keelung is Taiwan's main north coast ferry hub. Regular ferries run to the Matsu Islands (a longer overnight crossing) and there are international ferry services. Domestic ferry schedules are seasonal — check ahead.

The train station is central, within easy walking distance of the harbour, the night market, and most sights.
