YM Oceanic Culture and Art Museum

Shipping company museum on the waterfront with maritime history and contemporary art

The Yang Ming Oceanic Culture and Art Museum sits on the Keelung waterfront and is one of the better small museums in the city. Yang Ming is a major Taiwanese shipping line, and the museum traces the history of seafaring and ocean trade with a focus on Taiwan's maritime identity. The permanent collection covers traditional fishing culture, the development of the modern container shipping industry, and the ecology of the waters around Taiwan. There is also a changing programme of contemporary art exhibitions that make use of the dramatic harbour-facing spaces.

The building itself is worth a look — it makes the most of its waterfront position with large windows over the port. On a clear day you can watch container ships manoeuvring in the harbour while standing in front of displays about how those same ships operate. The museum is a short walk from the train station along the harbour boulevard. Admission is modest and the air conditioning is aggressive — bring a layer if you plan to spend more than an hour inside.
