Zhuputan Temple

Elaborately decorated folk religion temple in the city centre

Zhuputan Temple is one of Keelung's more ornate Taiwanese folk religion temples, its facade dense with ceramic figurines, dragon pillars, and painted roof panels depicting scenes from classical Chinese mythology. The interior is as busy as the exterior — multiple altars, clouds of incense, and the sound of devotees shaking fortune sticks. It operates as a working religious site, not a tourist attraction, which means you will see actual ritual practice during your visit.

The temple is dedicated to a community of deities popular in Taiwan's folk religion, combining elements of Taoism, Buddhism, and local beliefs. The surrounding neighbourhood is one of the older parts of the city centre, with traditional shop-houses and a market street nearby. Visit on a festival day if you can — Keelung's Ghost Festival in the seventh lunar month is one of the largest in Taiwan, and Zhuputan is one of the key sites. At any other time, a quiet morning visit allows you to observe temple life without crowds.
