Tainan's bar and cafe scene is quieter and more low-key than Taipei's, which suits the city. The old centre has a concentration of cafes in converted shophouses and Japanese colonial buildings, many of them single-owner operations with strong local followings. The bar scene is scattered and tends toward whisky bars and craft beer spots rather than nightclubs. Drink culture here is tied to food culture — the evening moves from the night market to a small bar, not the other way around. The area around Zhongyi Road and the lanes west of Shengnong Street has the highest concentration of independent cafes.
