Tainan's things to do are layered across 400 years of history — Dutch forts, Qing temples, Japanese colonial buildings, and one of Taiwan's most distinctive food cultures. The old core of the city, roughly bounded by the surviving city gates, contains most of the historical sites in an area compact enough to walk. The Anping district, four kilometres west toward the coast, holds the original Dutch settlement and makes a good half-day excursion.
