Beehive Whisky Bar

Beehive is one of the most respected whisky bars in Tainan, operating out of a narrow shophouse near the Koxinga Shrine that has been fitted out with rows of bottles and dim lighting in the manner of a serious drink spot rather than a nightlife venue. The selection leans toward Scotch single malts but covers Japanese, Irish, and Taiwanese whisky — Kavalan and Omar, both produced in Taiwan, are well represented and worth trying if you haven't encountered them elsewhere.

The bar is small and fills up quickly on weekend evenings, and the atmosphere is conversational rather than loud. The bar staff know their spirits and are willing to make recommendations based on preference. Tainan's bar scene is not large, but Beehive is the kind of place that makes a city's drinking culture feel like it belongs to the city — no international template, just a shophouse, good bottles, and the smell of old wood.
