Caoshan Moon World is a badland landscape in Zuozhen, where soft mudstone has eroded into grey ridges, gullies, and slopes that look oddly bare in subtropical Taiwan. The name is not subtle, but it fits: in dry weather the chalky ground and sparse vegetation make the area feel almost lunar.
It is not central Tainan, so it works best with a car or as part of a wider Zuozhen and Xinhua outing. Avoid wet weather, when the clay turns slippery and the views lose their sharpness. On a clear day, the contrast between the badlands, palms, and green hills is the whole reason to go.
