The road running back from Surin Beach has a handful of small coffee shops serving the area's resident and working population — not destination cafes, but functional, pleasant spots for a morning espresso or Thai iced coffee before heading to the beach. The coffee is typically good; Thailand's specialty coffee culture has spread well beyond Bangkok, and even modest roadside shops in Phuket now often use decent beans and know how to use their espresso machines.
Thai iced coffee — strong, sweetened with condensed milk, poured over ice — remains the local standard and is excellent in hot weather. Fresh fruit smoothies are made to order and are a better choice than anything from a pre-mixed bottle. A few of these shops also serve Thai breakfast: rice porridge, toast with pandan jam, or khai kata (Thai-style fried eggs). Opening hours tend to be early morning through early afternoon.
