Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall

Domed Italian-marble throne hall, the architectural centrepiece of Dusit

Commissioned by King Rama V and completed in 1915, the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall is a soaring Italian-Renaissance confection of Carrara marble and frescoed domes that anchors the Dusit district's grand royal axis. Its great central cupola, painted with scenes from the Chakri dynasty, was the work of Italian artists and remains one of the most opulent interiors in the country.

The hall has served as the first parliament building and as a backdrop for royal ceremonies. Fronted by the equestrian statue of Rama V and a long ceremonial plaza, it is best admired from the outside, glowing white against the Bangkok sky. Opening to visitors has been intermittent in recent years, so check current access before making a special trip.
