Sanam Luang — Royal Ground — is the large open field immediately north of the Grand Palace, one of the most historically significant public spaces in Thailand. Royal cremation ceremonies for members of the Royal Family have been held here for centuries; the field has also hosted coronation celebrations, kite-flying competitions, and political demonstrations of all kinds.
The field is large and largely bare, which allows it to fill with life in different ways at different times of day and year. Early mornings see joggers and a fresh produce market along the perimeter. In the kite-flying season (February to April) the field fills with elaborate traditional kites. The surrounding temples, the National Theatre, and the National Museum all frame the space, making it a natural gathering point for a day exploring the old city.
