Wat Pho

Huge reclining Buddha and birthplace of Thai massage

Bangkok's oldest and largest temple, located just south of the Grand Palace. Wat Pho is famous for its enormous reclining Buddha and as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. The temple's massage school on the eastern side of the compound is the real draw for many visitors -- you can get a proper Thai massage for a fraction of what you would pay at a hotel spa, or even sign up for a multi-day course. Admission 200 baht.

A story
The reclining Buddha is 46 metres long and 15 metres high — so large that it had to be built inside the building constructed around it. The feet alone are five metres long, inlaid with 108 auspicious symbols in mother-of-pearl. The number 108 recurs throughout Theravada Buddhism: the temple compound also contains 108 bronze bowls along a cloister wall into which you drop coins for merit.
