Wat Nang Phaya

Wat Nang Phaya sits in the shadow of Wat Yai but is worth a visit in its own right. The temple dates from the Sukhothai period and is notable for its stucco reliefs — considered among the finest surviving examples of 15th-century Thai decorative work. The name translates roughly as "Temple of the Queen," though the historical basis for the name is uncertain.

The temple is quiet and rarely crowded, which makes it a pleasant contrast to the bustle around the main Wat Yai compound next door. It's easy to combine both in a single morning visit along the east bank of the Nan.
