Songkhla Lake (Thale Sap) is Thailand's largest lake and makes for an excellent half-day outing. The Khu Khut Waterfowl Park on the lake's edge, reached via Highway 4107, is a renowned bird-watching site where boats can be hired. Further north, the Thale Noi Waterfowl Sanctuary is another important wetland refuge. Wat Pha Kho, home to a reclining Buddha and associated with the revered monk Luang Por Thuat, is worth a visit. The Southern Thais Studies Institute, 15 km from the city, holds an interesting collection of southern Thai folk art in a pleasant garden setting.
