Chantaburi Fruit Market

Vast covered market dealing in Chantaburi durians, mangosteens, and rambutans

The Chantaburi fruit market — Talad Phon Lamai — is a covered wholesale market on the north edge of town that runs seven days a week and explodes in scale during the summer fruit season. From May through July the lanes fill with Monthong durians, lychees, longans, mangosteens, and the deep-red Chantaburi rambutans for which the province is famous.

Even off-season it is worth a visit for tropical fruit you may not have seen — salak (snake-skin fruit), longkong, jackfruit — at prices a fraction of those in Bangkok. Bring small bills. Best in the morning.

A story
Chantaburi is Thailand's biggest durian-producing province, and the local Monthong cultivar — large, golden, and intensely sweet — is one of the most prized in the world. During the May-to-July harvest the city smells overwhelmingly of durian, and the market opens before dawn to handle the trade.
