Sala Kaew Ku (Wat Khaek)

Surreal sculpture park of towering Hindu-Buddhist concrete figures

About 5 km east of town, Sala Kaew Ku is a sculpture park filled with towering concrete figures -- some up to five storeys tall -- depicting a wild blend of Hindu, Buddhist and Taoist imagery. The park was created by the mystic Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, who built a similar park across the river in Vientiane before fleeing Laos in 1975. Set aside a couple of hours to wander the grounds; the sheer strangeness of the place is hard to absorb quickly. You can get there cheaply by songthaew or charter a tuk-tuk for the round trip.
