Sakon Nakhon is a provincial city in northern Isan, far from Thailand's main tourist routes and all the better for it if you like religious history, lake country, and slow provincial streets. It sits by Nong Han, one of the largest natural lakes in northeastern Thailand, with the Phu Phan mountains rising to the south.
This is a Buddhist town with a long memory. Wat Phra That Choeng Chum is the spiritual centre, while older Khmer-style remains such as Phra That Dum show how layered the region's history is. Around the city, forest temples and meditation sites tie Sakon Nakhon to the Thai forest tradition.
The most striking day out is Wat Tham Pha Daen, a hill temple with carved rocks, garden terraces, and views back over the lake plain. In town, Nong Han keeps the geography honest: boats, fishers, and lakeside parks soften the grid of roads and government buildings. Sakon Nakhon is not polished, but it has enough texture to reward a spare day in this corner of Isan.
