Wat Matchimawat, known to almost everyone as Wat Klang ("the central temple"), is the oldest and most important Buddhist temple in Udon Thani. Founded in the early 19th century, it sits a short walk from Pu-ya Shrine and the central market.
The grounds are quiet, the ubosot is decorated with classical Thai murals, and the principal Buddha image is the subject of a popular local pilgrimage during the Songkran festival in April. A good half hour for visitors who want to step away from the lake and into something cooler and shaded.
