Pak Kret district, in the northern part of Nonthaburi province, is home to one of Thailand's most intact Mon communities — descendants of Mon immigrants who came to Siam during the Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin periods, fleeing Burmese expansion. The Mon of Pak Kret have preserved aspects of their distinct culture over several centuries, including traditional music, unglazed earthenware pottery, and architectural styles distinct from mainstream Thai.
The Ko Kret island market and the temples along the riverbanks here are the most accessible expressions of this heritage. The pottery workshops on Ko Kret produce work that is recognisably different from central Thai ceramics: thinner-walled, with distinctive patterns. The Mon Songkran festival, held one week after the national date, features traditional costume, dance, and processions that draw visitors from Bangkok.
