Bor Sang is best known as the umbrella village — families here have been making hand-painted paper and silk parasols for generations, and you can watch the whole process from bamboo-frame assembly to the final brushstrokes. The village sits along Highway 1006 (the San Kamphaeng road), about 9 km east of central Chiang Mai.
The road between Chiang Mai and San Kamphaeng is lined on both sides with workshops and showrooms selling Thai silk, cotton, lacquerware, ceramics, silverware, woodwork, and jewelry. You can watch artisans at work in most of the factories and buy directly. Prices are reasonable, though bargaining is expected. The annual Bor Sang Umbrella Festival in January is worth timing a visit around if you're in the area.
