Wat Jong Sung

Also called Wat Utthayarom, Wat Jong Sung is the most distinctive temple in town. Two slender, whitewashed, gold-tipped chedis in pure Shan style rise above a tiled compound at the north end of Mae Sariang. The wooden viharn next door has open verandas with carved teak balustrades and a beautifully decorated coffered ceiling.

The temple is set back from the road on the riverbank side and is rarely busy. Come in the late afternoon when the light catches the whitewash and the local monks come out to sit on the veranda steps.

A story
The whitewashed chedis are an unmistakable Shan signature — Wat Jong Sung was built in 1896 by Burmese teak traders who came down the Yuam River with their families and brought their own architects with them.
