Mae Sariang

Mae Hong Son valley town on the Yuam River, surrounded by forested hills and border country

Mae Sariang is one of seven districts in Mae Hong Son province, and one of the most rewarding to linger in. Often overlooked by tourists moving between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, it has real character and plenty to explore.

The town sits in a broad valley along the Yuam River, surrounded by forested hills and national parks. Nearby, the Salawin River forms part of the Thailand-Burma border — you can hire a longtail boat at the Burmese-style village of Ban Mae Sam Laep for a day on the water. The Salawin National Park and Mae Ngao National Park are both within reach.

Despite its small size, Mae Sariang is well set up for travelers. The people are friendly, the atmosphere relaxed, and it has the easy familiarity of a place where everyone knows each other.
