When to Go

The best time to visit Mae Hong Son is November through February: cool temperatures (dropping as low as 2°C in January), dry skies, and the valley mist that makes early morning views from Doi Kong Mu so atmospheric. March and April bring haze from agricultural burning across northern Thailand and Burma, reducing visibility significantly.

The rainy season (May–October) makes trekking muddy and some roads impassable, but the forests are lush and the waterfalls impressive. The town is never truly crowded; even during high season (December–January), the guesthouses rarely fill completely. Thais tend to visit for the cool-season mist and the annual Poi Sang Long festival (March–April), when young boys are ordained as novice monks in elaborate Shan ceremonies.
