The most prominent landmark in Prachuap Khiri Khan town, Khao Chong Krachok is a steep limestone hill that rises directly behind the northern end of the bay. A staircase of 396 steps leads up to the temple complex at the summit, Wat Thamikaram, which offers panoramic views over the bay, the limestone peaks to the north and south, and the narrowest point of mainland Thailand — just 12 kilometres separating the Gulf of Thailand from the Burmese border.
The climb takes about twenty minutes at a steady pace. Long-tailed macaques are a constant presence on the hillside, occasionally bold enough to snatch food and bags, so hold your belongings securely. At the summit, a gilded stupa and several small shrines occupy a terrace overlooking the town. The hole through the rock that gives the hill its name is visible from below but best appreciated from the steps as you ascend.
The temple is free to enter. Respectful dress — covered shoulders and knees — is expected, and sarongs are available if needed.
