Alanya Museum

The Alanya Museum covers two collections in one building: an archaeological section and an ethnographic section. It is small by Turkish museum standards, but well organised and genuinely worth an hour of your time, particularly if you want context for the castle and the Seljuk monuments around the harbour.

The archaeological galleries trace the history of the Alanya region from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Highlights include coins, ceramics, jewellery, and funerary objects recovered from excavations in the area. A number of the Roman-era pieces come from the ancient city of Syedra, which occupied a headland about 25 km to the east.

The ethnographic section presents traditional life in the region: costumes, textiles, copperwork, and domestic objects from the Ottoman period and the early Turkish republic. It gives some sense of what the area looked like before the tourist hotels arrived.

The museum is located in the town centre, a short walk from the harbour and the Red Tower. It is closed on Mondays.
