Gümüşlük

Gümüşlük is a small fishing village at the western tip of the Bodrum peninsula, about 20 kilometres from Bodrum town, and easily the most pleasant place on the peninsula for a meal. The village wraps around a protected bay, and a line of simple fish restaurants stretches along the waterfront with tables practically in the water at high tide.

The fish is exceptionally fresh — the village still has a working fishing fleet — and the atmosphere is genuinely relaxed rather than tourist-processed. You can wade across the shallow water to Tavşan Adası (Rabbit Island), a small islet a hundred metres from shore, where there is a ruined building and more of the underwater ancient ruins visible through the clear water. Go for lunch rather than dinner; evenings get busy in summer.

A story
Gümüşlük sits over the ancient city of Myndos, which according to legend was one of the cities that Macedonian king Antigonus I tried to relocate en masse in the 3rd century BC, ordering its entire population to move to a new city he was building nearby. The Myndans, reportedly, refused and stayed put. The ruins of ancient Myndos are visible underwater just offshore, including sections of the ancient harbour walls.
