Red and Rose Valleys

The Red Valley (Kızılçukur) and the adjoining Rose Valley (Güllüdere) start immediately south of Çavuşin and offer some of the best walking in Cappadocia. The valley walls are striated with bands of red, pink, and white tuff that catch the light in extraordinary ways at sunset, hence the names.

Several walking routes link the valleys to Göreme: the Red Valley to Çavuşin trail is about 4 km and easy enough for most walkers. Along the way you pass several rock-cut churches with surviving frescoes — Haçlı Kilise (Cross Church) and Üç Haçlı Kilise (Church of Three Crosses) are the most rewarding. Carry water and start early; there is no shade.
