Nevşehir Castle

The Nevşehir Castle (Nevşehir Kalesi) occupies the high ridge above the old town, offering wide views across the central Cappadocian plateau. The fortress dates from the early 18th century, built during the era when the Ottoman grand vizier Ibrahim Pasha was born here and transformed Nevşehir from a small village into a proper town.

The climb takes about 20 minutes from the bazaar area. At the top, the remains of the castle walls enclose an area with panoramic views extending to the volcanic landscape beyond the city. On clear days you can see Göreme, Ürgüp, and the distinctive volcanic cones of the region. There is no entry charge. The approach through the old quarter is pleasant in itself.

A story
The castle sits above the Kayaşehir underground city, one of the largest rock-cut underground complexes in Cappadocia, discovered only in 2013 during urban redevelopment work. Estimates suggest it could have housed up to 20,000 people across its multiple levels.
