Damat İbrahim Paşa Külliyesi

The Külliye of Damat İbrahim Paşa is the architectural centrepiece of old Nevşehir, built in the 1720s by the city's most famous son, the Ottoman grand vizier Ibrahim Paşa. The complex consists of a mosque, a medrese (religious school), a library, and a hammam, all built in the Ottoman classical style.

The mosque is the finest building in Nevşehir, with a well-proportioned facade and interior. The attached medrese building has been converted to other uses but the courtyard can be entered. The complex is in the old quarter below the castle, making it a natural stop on the walk up to the fortress.

A story
Damat İbrahim Paşa was born in Nevşehir when it was a dusty Anatolian backwater and rose to become grand vizier of the Ottoman Empire under Ahmed III. He transformed the city with this complex and a massive programme of construction — then was strangled on the Sultan's orders in 1730 during the Patrona Halil revolt. His buildings outlasted him by three centuries.
