Uçhisar Castle

Uçhisar Castle is not a castle in the European sense but a single colossal volcanic outcrop riddled with hand-cut rooms, passages, and storerooms — the highest point in Cappadocia and visible across the whole plateau. A short, steep climb (about twenty minutes from the village square) takes you to the summit, where a railed platform offers what is widely agreed to be the best view in the region: Pigeon Valley below, Göreme to the east, Mount Erciyes on the far horizon.

Sunrise and sunset are the obvious times to go — at dawn, the hot-air balloons rising over Göreme are framed perfectly. The site charges a small entrance fee. Wear shoes with grip; the polished rock can be slippery, especially in winter when ice forms on the upper steps.

A story
The rock was inhabited from at least Byzantine times, when it served as a fortress and refuge against Arab raids. Tunnels reportedly connected it underground to Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, although most have collapsed. By the 1960s the deteriorating cave dwellings were judged unsafe and the families inside were resettled to houses below.
