Sobesos

Excavated Roman ruins near Sahinefendi with mosaic floors and early chapels

Sobesos is a small Roman archaeological site near Sahinefendi, south of Urgup. The ruins date from around the 4th century AD and include mosaic floors, two chapels, and the outlines of other buildings.

The site was only identified in 2002, and excavations have continued since then. It is not as dramatic as Cappadocia's rock-cut churches or underground cities, but it adds a different layer to the region: late Roman settlement on the open plain.
