Dalyan River Channel

Reed-lined channel network linking lake to sea

The river that gives Dalyan its name is technically a network of reed-lined channels carrying the outflow of Köyceğiz Lake south to the sea. The main channel runs past the town, under the Lycian tombs, and out through the marshes to the sandbar at Iztuzu.

Wooden flat-bottomed boats — formerly used for fishing — now ferry visitors up and down. Hire one for a half-day and the standard loop covers the tombs, mud baths, and the beach. In spring and autumn, the reedbeds and quieter side channels are excellent for spotting kingfishers, terrapins, and (rarely) otters.
