Myra Rock Tombs and Theatre

The Lycian necropolis at Myra is cut into a sheer cliff face above the town — hundreds of elaborate tomb facades carved directly into the rock, some imitating the fronts of wooden Lycian houses, others with painted interiors still faintly visible. The scale is extraordinary; the cliff appears to be honeycombed with tombs from top to bottom. At the foot of the cliff, a well-preserved Roman theatre with much of its stage building intact.

A story
Nicholas of Myra, the real-life bishop who became the template for Santa Claus, was born in Patara around 270 CE and served as bishop of Myra until his death around 343 CE. His bones were taken from Myra by Venetian merchants in 1087 and transferred to Bari in southern Italy, where they remain in the Basilica di San Nicola.
