Ephesus is best used as a base for several nearby ancient sites. Priene, Miletus, and Didyma form a natural circuit to the south, easily done in a day by car or with a minibus tour from Kuşadası or Selçuk. Priene is a compact Hellenistic city on a dramatic hilltop. Miletus was one of the great cities of antiquity — its Theatre is massive and well preserved. Didyma has the Temple of Apollo, one of the largest temples ever built, with enormous columns still standing. The Ephesus Museum in Selçuk (15 minutes from the site) holds the best finds from the excavations and is worth an hour.
