Things to Do

The main site of Ephesus is one of the best-preserved ancient cities in the world and can easily occupy a full day. The Library of Celsus, whose two-storey façade was reconstructed from original fragments, is the iconic image of the site. The Great Theatre, with capacity for 25,000 people, looks down the Arcadian Way toward the silted-up harbour. The Terrace Houses — multi-storey Roman townhouses with mosaics, frescoes, and marble panelling still largely intact — are an additional charge but essential. Buy tickets early and arrive in the morning before tour groups from the cruise ships at Kuşadası arrive. The Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders, is now almost entirely gone: a single column stands near Selçuk, and the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk holds the best finds. The House of the Virgin Mary, on the wooded hillside above the site, is a short drive away and draws pilgrims and curious visitors alike.
