Girlevik Waterfall

About 30 kilometres southeast of Erzincan, the Girlevik stream drops over a basalt cliff in two stages, the lower of which is the more spectacular. The setting is a steep gorge with poplar groves at the base and dramatic columnar rock above. It is one of the best-known waterfalls in eastern Anatolia and a standard local picnic destination — in summer the bottom of the falls is crowded with families grilling kebabs in the shade.

The falls are at their fullest from April to June, when snowmelt from the surrounding peaks pushes the flow well above its usual volume. There is a small village just below the falls, a tea garden, and a footpath up to the top of the upper drop. The road in from the Erzincan-Tercan highway is paved most of the way.

A story
In winter the Girlevik falls freeze solid into translucent blue curtains thirty metres high — Turkish ice climbers from Erzurum and Trabzon converge on the gorge for several weeks each year, and the access road has to be cleared by tractor.
