Erzincan's setting in a broad valley surrounded by mountains makes it a base for outdoor sports. The surrounding peaks offer trekking and skiing in winter, while the Euphrates (Firat) river flowing through the region provides opportunities for whitewater rafting. Paragliding has become popular from the hills above the valley, and the dam lakes are used for water skiing.
The Mama Hatun Kumbeti, a distinctive Seljuk-era tomb with a conical roof, and the ruins of Altintepe — a significant Urartian archaeological site about 20 kilometres east — are the main historical sights. The Girlevik Waterfall, about 30 kilometres southeast of the city, makes a pleasant half-day excursion.
