Zilkale is a ruined Byzantine castle perched high above the Firtina Valley. There is little left inside the walls, but the setting is superb: stone ramparts, forested slopes, and mountain views in every direction.
It is one of the best stops on the road between the Black Sea coast and Ayder. Come for the view rather than a long castle visit.
