Mount Erciyes

Mount Erciyes rises to 3,917 metres at the southern edge of Kayseri, a symmetrical volcanic cone that is visible from most of the city and from large parts of central Anatolia on clear days. It is the highest peak in the Taurus Mountains east of the Konya plain, and its permanent snowfields feed springs that have supported settlements in the region since antiquity.

In winter, the Erciyes ski resort on the mountain's northern slopes is one of Turkey's best, with modern lifts and long runs at altitude. The ski season typically runs from December to April. In summer, the mountain is popular for trekking — the summit requires a full day and some mountaineering experience, but lower routes through the volcanic landscape are accessible without special equipment.

The mountain is 25 kilometres south of the city centre. Minibuses run to the ski village in winter; in summer, access requires a car or taxi.

A story
Mount Erciyes is an extinct stratovolcano, and it is the volcanic eruptions of Erciyes — along with those of Hasan Dağı to the west — that created the bizarre landscape of Cappadocia. Millions of years of ash and lava hardened into tufa, then erosion carved the fairy chimneys and valleys that draw visitors from across the world. Kayseri's symbol created its region's greatest attraction.
