The Aziziye Mosque stands at the heart of the bazaar district between Alaeddin Hill and the Mevlana shrine. The current building, completed in 1872 under Sultan Abdülaziz (whose name it carries), replaces an earlier Seljuk-era mosque on the same site. The architecture is distinctively late-Ottoman Baroque — curved gables, ornate carved stonework, twin minarets with prominent stone capitals — and is unlike anything else in Konya.
The interior is brightly lit, with painted murals of mosques and gardens replacing the usual restrained tile and calligraphy. It is worth slipping into for the contrast with the more austere Seljuk monuments. The surrounding lanes are the centre of the old bazaar quarter, with the Bedesten just to the west.
