The central old town of Konya — from Alaeddin Hill east to the Mevlana shrine — is small and easily walked end to end in 20–25 minutes. Most of the major sights cluster within this compact area, and walking is by far the best way to see them.
For the longer distances, Konya has a useful tram network. The main line (Tramway 1) runs north–south through the city, connecting the otogar and the railway station to the centre and to the university districts to the south. Tickets are bought from the platform machines or via the KonyaKart transport card, which works on trams and buses alike. The tram passes within a short walk of Alaeddin Hill and the Mevlana shrine.
Taxis are cheap and plentiful; insist on the meter (taksimetre). For day trips out of the city — to Sille, Çatalhöyük, Sultanhanı — a taxi for the half-day is the easiest option, and most central hotels can arrange one for a fixed price. For longer trips into the surrounding region, rental cars are available from agencies at the airport and the railway station.
Driving in central Konya is a poor idea — traffic is heavy, the one-way system is confusing, and parking is scarce. Walk or take the tram.
