Selimiye Mosque

Sixteenth-century Ottoman mosque, façade-companion to the Mevlana shrine

The Selimiye Mosque stands directly opposite the Mevlana Museum across the broad open square, and the two together — the green-tiled dervish complex and the Ottoman imperial mosque — form the architectural set-piece of central Konya. The mosque was built between 1558 and 1574 under Sultan Selim II, with construction lasting through the reign and overseen, possibly, by the school of the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan.

The plan is classical Ottoman: a single domed central space flanked by half-domes, fronted by a five-bay portico and twin pencil minarets. The interior is plain by Sinan's usual standards but the proportions are calm and harmonious. The mosque is in everyday use; visitors should remove shoes and dress modestly. Stand on the steps after sunset prayer for the view of the lit Mevlana shrine across the square.
