Mardin Citadel

The Mardin Citadel occupies the highest point of the ridge, a rocky summit that has held a fortress since antiquity and still contains an active Turkish military installation — which means most of the ancient stonework is inaccessible to visitors. The access road is closed and the citadel itself is off-limits, but the outer walls and gateway are visible from below, and the strategic logic of the site is immediately apparent: from the heights, the entire Mesopotamian plain is visible in all directions.

The citadel dates in its current form mainly to the Artukid and later periods, with rebuilding during the Ottoman era. The views from the road approaching the military zone, and from the terrace of the Sultan Isa Medrese below, give a better sense of the topography than any formal sight. The lower slopes of the citadel hill, winding up through residential streets, are among the quietest and most atmospheric parts of the old city.
