Shopping

The Marmaris bazaar, tucked behind the harbour in the old town, is built squarely around tourism — hundreds of shops selling leather jackets, carpets and kilims, silver and onyx jewellery, copperware, and every "original" fake designer handbag you can imagine. Bargaining is expected and enjoyed; a starting offer of a third to half the asking price is a reasonable opening position. The genuinely worthwhile local buy is pine honey (çam balı), a fragrant dark honey made by bees that feed on aphids in the pine forests around Marmaris — it is hard to find outside this part of Turkey. For something closer to a normal shopping experience, the Netsel Marina at the east end of the seafront has a cluster of brand-name boutiques.
