Ashgabat Flagpole is one of the city's more blunt statements of national symbolism: a very tall pole, a very large Turkmen flag, and a broad plaza setting that makes it impossible to miss. It stands south of the centre among the monumental avenues, parks, and white-marble government architecture that define modern Ashgabat.
This is not a subtle sight, but it does help explain the city. Come for a quick look while exploring the southern districts, especially near sunset when the flag and surrounding monuments photograph better than they do under the hard midday sun.
