Halk Hakydasy, meaning People's Memory, is one of Ashgabat's major state memorial landscapes. The complex gathers monuments connected with the Battle of Geok Tepe, the Second World War, and the devastating 1948 Ashgabat earthquake, making it a concentrated expression of the historical memory promoted in modern Turkmenistan.
Like much of Ashgabat, the site is monumental, formal, and heavily symbolic. Travellers will get the most from it with a guide who can explain the separate memorials and the earthquake story; without that context it can read mainly as a vast ceremonial plaza on the edge of the city.
