The Spice Souk is one of the most aromatic corners of the old city: a dense cluster of shops in Deira selling saffron, dried limes (loomi), frankincense, rose water, hibiscus, henna, and spice blends from Iran, India, and East Africa. The sacks of vivid reds, yellows, and browns spilling out of the shopfronts are extremely photogenic, and the traders know it.
It is a working market, not a tourist showcase — prices for cooking spices are reasonable and frankincense is good value compared to European specialist shops. The best time to visit is morning, when the light is good and the crowds thinner. From here it is a short walk to the Gold Souk and the abra landing at the old dhow wharves.
