Snoopy Island

Snoopy Island is a small rocky outcrop in the Gulf of Oman, just 200 metres offshore from Al Aqah Beach in northern Fujairah. It is the best snorkelling spot in the UAE — the waters around the island are clear, relatively deep, and thick with marine life. Reef fish, sea turtles, moray eels, and the occasional small shark are all regularly encountered. The island itself is accessible by a short swim or kayak from the beach.

The Sandy Beach Resort adjacent to the beach rents snorkelling equipment, kayaks, and kayak-mounted glass-bottomed boxes, and offers scuba diving through its dive centre. Non-guests can pay a day fee to use the beach and water sports facilities. The diving around Snoopy Island and the nearby reefs covers a range of depths suitable for both beginners and experienced divers, with several good wreck sites within easy reach.

Al Aqah Beach is about 30 kilometres north of Fujairah city by the coastal road. The drive along the coast passes several resort hotels. Plan to arrive early in summer — the parking fills up by mid-morning on weekends, and the sun is punishing without shade.

A story
Snoopy Island gets its name from the distinctive rock formation that, from the right angle, looks uncannily like Charles Schulz's cartoon dog lying on its back. The resemblance is most convincing from the beach at low tide. The marine life around the island has no opinion on the matter.
