Souq al-Arsah

Souq al-Arsah is claimed to be the oldest covered market in the UAE, a shaded courtyard of small shops selling traditional Emirati crafts, silver jewellery, antiques, and frankincense. The architecture — whitewashed walls, wooden lattice screens, and a palm-wood roof — is the most authentic traditional building in Sharjah, even though it is partly a reconstruction.

The selection of goods is genuinely different from the gold souqs and electronics markets that dominate the Gulf shopping landscape: you can find old Bedouin jewellery, Omani daggers, traditional coffeepots, camel-hair carpets, and small antiques alongside the obligatory tourist souvenirs. A traditional coffee shop in the central courtyard serves qahwa (cardamom coffee) with dates. It is the most atmospheric place in Sharjah for an unhurried browse.

A story
The name al-Arsah means "the place where caravans rest," and the covered market at this site was a stopping point for traders arriving from the interior as far back as the 16th century. The current structure is a 20th-century reconstruction rather than an original building, but the goods sold here — silver Bedouin jewellery, frankincense, traditional coffeepots, handwoven textiles — are the same kinds of items the caravans would have brought.
