Hanoi's medieval commercial district, 36 narrow streets each traditionally named for the trade once carried out there — Hang Bac (silver), Hang Gai (silk), Hang Quat (fans). Many streets still cluster by product today, even if the product has modernised: Hang Thiec became tin then metal goods, Hang Ma is paper offerings for funerals. The best way to explore is to walk without a map, get lost, and watch the city do its shopping. Go early, before the heat and scooters peak.
