Bình Tây Market (Cholon)

Huge wholesale market in Chinatown, less touristy and more authentic than Bến Thành

Bình Tây Market is the main market of Cholon — Ho Chi Minh City's Chinatown (District 5) — and is considerably larger and less tourist-oriented than Bến Thành. Built in the 1920s by a wealthy Chinese merchant named Quách Đàm, the market has a central courtyard and a distinctive yellow-painted clock tower.

The market specialises in wholesale goods — dried goods, spices, herbs, household items, and Chinese medicine. There are far fewer souvenir stalls than at Bến Thành, and prices reflect this. Wandering the market and the streets immediately around it, with their Chinese-language shop signs, herbalists, and tea houses, gives a sense of the older Saigon that predates the tourist infrastructure.
